Science Night

Hello friends and family! I’m here to report on Science Night! Let me tell you a little bit about it. Science Night will take place on March 26 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. You can learn about tornadoes, snow, and star watching! Scientists from SEEDS come show us different science experiments.

Many EK Powe students love this special night. McKenzie, and EK Powe 5^th grader proclaimed that she “loves Science Night because it is so fun.”

            Avery, another fifth grader, stated that she “likes Science Night, especially the fake snow from SEEDS.”

            Jaipria shared the same feelings. “I love Science Night because it is educational and fun. I really like seeing my friends there.”

            Donnell was the only classmate I interviewed who said he did not love Science Night. He did finally break and tell me that “I like the science activities.”

            Well, there you have it! Grab your friends and family and come on down to EK Powe for Science Night on March 26 from 6 to 8.

Fairies

I’m here to tell you all about fairies!

What Fairies Look Like:

Fairies have butterfly wings because they wouldn’t be able to fly well with bee wings. They are usually about five inches tall.

Fairy Facts:

Fairies are born when a baby laughs for the very first time.

Fairies aren’t able to fly with just their wings. They need something yellow, something sparkly, something like PIXIE DUST.

Fairies can live forever.

Which came first? The chicken or the egg?

             Hello! This is the nightly news with your favorite reporter Leo. I have the scoop on one of the most debated topics in history. You may be thinking this will be a news article about if Han Solo or Greedo shot first, it isn’t.  This will all be about if it was the chicken or the egg that came first.  Instead of talking with experts, the Chickenists (who believe the chicken came first) and the Eggists (who believe the egg came first), I decided to go right to the true sources, chickens and eggs.

Leo: Chicken, I hear that you are the underdog in the chicken/egg struggle. Why should we support you?

Chicken: Cluck, cluck, bawk! Peck, cluck, cluck, cluck, cluck cluck, cluck, bawk! Bawk! Bawk! Peck, peck.

 TRANSLATION: Impossible! Anyone should be able to see that I’m the most popular candidate! I laid the egg!

Leo: The egg knew you were going to say that and shared with me the following response:

“Well, the chicken laid the egg but that chicken came from that egg too”

Chicken: Cluck, cluck, bawk! Cluck, peck, peck, bawk!

TRANSLATION: I don’t care what that stupid egg says! The chicken laid the egg and that is that!

               After speaking with the chicken for awhile longer it became clear that there would be no changing of the chicken’s mind. I decided it was time to turn to the egg.

Leo: I hear you have the most votes and support in this struggle. Any vain comments?

Egg: …

Leo: Um, did you hear me?

Egg:…

Leo: Not talking, eh?

Egg:…

Leo: What if I said I as a chicken and I needed my opinion changed?

Egg: Fine, fine, fine. I’ll talk!

Leo: AH! I see that you have finally CRACKED.

Egg: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Frankly, I’m surprised you’re a Chickenist. I’m definitely the most popular in the struggle.

Leo: OK, that is true, but I came here to find out why you are the most popular, not for you to tell me that I should vote for you.

Egg: Here is why I came first. Every chicken or dinosaur or fish that we have evolved from came from an egg!

Leo: Well, what about the first organism? It was just created out of nowhere, right?

Egg: How do you know? Were you there when the first organism was created?

Leo: Well, no, but---

Egg: You weren’t there! You don’t know how the first organism was created!

Leo: But-

Egg: No buts! I came first!

                As you can see, each candidate has a very different point of view. As for the actual answer, the truth has yet to be revealed.

Owen 2

“Hello, what’s your name?” I asked a man. Something about his face looked familiar.
“My name is Owen,” he told me.

“Hey! That’s my name!” I responded.

“Cool!” He replied

“What’s your favorite animal?” I asked.

“I like Penguins.”

“Hmmmmm…. OK. Well, what’s your favorite color?”

“Yellow.”

“Ok, ok, Mr. Wise Guy, what are you doing?”

“What are you talking about!” the man yelled.

“You are copying me! My favorite color, my favorite animal, even my name!” Suddenly I shoved him realizing he was even copying my movements.

Crash! The mirror where Owen 2 had been standing suddenly fell.

“What is going on up there?” I heard my mom shout up the stairs.

“Uhhhhhhh… Nothing Mom!” I realized I needed to clean up the shattered mirror. Mom never found out about the mirror and I never saw Owen 2 again.

EK Powe 5th Graders Need More Fieldtrips

           Do EK Powe 5^th graders need more field trips? I think so. Each class has only had one field trip this year and we are almost at the end of the school year. I have heard that we will be having one big field trip at the end of the school year but it hasn’t happened yet. Even the kindergarteners have had way more field trips than us.

I asked some of my peers what they thought.

Jaipria stated “I don’t think that we should have the same amount of field trips because we have a big field trip at the end of the year.”

Ayah shared some of Jaipria’s opinions. “I think we should have more field trips but we don’t because in fifth grade you have to do way more work. It will be really rewarding to have our big trip at the end of year. It wouldn’t mind taking a lot of trips though.”

                Hopefully we will be on the open road soon.

Golden Corral: A Good Breakfast Destination or Not?

I usually like Golden Corral when it comes to dessert and spaghetti so I was excited to try it for breakfast.

When you think of breakfast what do you think about? Pancakes! That was the only thing that was bad about breakfast at Golden Coral.

The bacon was good, the donuts were good and the sausage was great. But, the one thing that I was looking forward to, the pancakes, were disgusting. They tasted like someone bathed in the batter, ate some, threw it up, a chef scraped the vomit up, mixed it in the next batch of batter and then put chili powder on it.

That is why I now don’t like eating at Golden Corral. I can still taste the pancakes and it was four days ago.

Vampire Bunny

Have you ever read Bunnicula? Do you know how in the book he opens his cage and then escape to go drain the juice from vegetables? Our class bunny Owl sometimes opens the door and escapes his cage too.  I call him Owlicula because he does this.

I also think Owl (or Owlicula) may be a vampire because whenever Ms. Bohlen lets him out of his cage he will jump around and nibble on the kids in the class. He has never nibbled on skin but he has nibbled on shoes and pants. I think if he could bite through the clothes he would try to suck blood.

Mysterious Meat

The cafeteria has a lot of different meats but they don’t tell us where they come from. The meat could be from a dog, a horse or maybe even a human. I hope that we don’t eat human meat because that would make us cannibals.

I took my concerns to Ms. Lyons. She assured me that the only meat we eat in the cafeteria comes from pigs, cows, turkeys and chickens. This made me feel better.

Two of the best soccer players at EK Powe are fourth graders Richard and Alfredo. Who know where or how these crazy kids learned their moves but they are sure good at soccer. At recess you will always see them playing.

The Origins of the Lady in the Ceiling

A long, long time ago EK Powe used to be a high school. There was an evil teacher who like to play tricks on her class, especially her class with annoying students. One day she climbed up in the ceiling. She planned to jump down and scare the class. When they came in the room they saw the hole and decided to close it up. No one knew she was in the ceiling and she became trapped  up there forever.

I’m An Artist!

Hi! I’m Lateá and I love to draw. My specialties are hearts, dogs, zombies, monsters, goblins, people, and houses. I am also good at making things out of shapes.

Sometimes I feel like I am not a good artist but Mr. Goff tells me to believe in myself. When he says this I know that I can do it. I love to think of myself as an artist. If you want to be an artist like me you just have to believe in yourself!

Mysterious Stall Door Locking, Authorities Looking in on the Case

In the bathroom near Mrs. Patterson and Mrs. Green’s room there have been reports of stall doors locking. Authorities recently rushed to the site only to find that the stall doors had been unlocked by head custodian Mr. CENSORED. Mr. CENSORED denied having tampered with the evidence and in turn placed blame on the assistant custodians.

Mr. CENSORED is currently a suspect. Authorities believe he worked with the original criminal, a student prankster. Due to the lack of fingerprints no formal charges have been pressed. The minor status of the culprit means the fingerprints would not even be in a database.

The custodians have denied all responsibility for the locked stall doors. When questioned they proclaimed that no right minded person would crawl under a stall door to unlock them. This would be a more convincing story if the custodians did not have ladders that enable them to climb over the stalls.

EK Powe Fashion Dos

      EK Powe Fashionistas can be spotted wearing spiked bracelets, ripped skinny jeans, scarves, Aeropostale shirts, converse boots and high-tops.

      What is in depends on who you talk to. Different students have a wide variety of go to styles.

      4^th grader Cameron stated that she likes to rock “Hello Kitty shirts and hoop earrings.”

      “I prefer long sleeve shirts, dangly earrings or hoops and jeans. I love to wear black and green!” Ayah, a fifth grader stated.

      “Leggings, stretchy shirts, dresses and small hoops are my fashion favorites,” said Jaipria, a fifth grader at Powe.

J + B = BFF

Jennifer and Brittany are some of the most awesome people ever. They both love ice cream. Jennifer’s favorite flavor is vanilla while Brittany’s is cookies and cream. They are both in Ms. McPhail’s 4^th grade class. They have been good friends since 3^rd grade. This means they have been good friends for two years.

Each day Brittany and Jennifer share lunches. They also both have crushes. They are always there for each other and work hard to make other people laugh and have fun.

This book really gives you the spooks! Since it’s a murder it’s really scary! I really enjoyed reading this book.

This is such a funny series! It makes fun of the things that upset the main character.

This series offers a magical adventure. I felt like I had traveled to a different world.

5th Grade Art

For the past month the fifth grade classes have been painting, sculpting and printing famous figures from history like Michael Jackson, Aaliyah and Anne Frank.

To do this we first had to sketch a picture of our person. After we finished our sketch we began to draw and paint our pictures. You can see our these in the hallway where Mr. Goff hung them.

After finishing our painting we were given the choice of sculpting or creating a print of our historical figure. Be sure to check the hallway outside the art room to see our latest works of art as we complete them.

How to Build a Rubber Band Helicopter

Materials you will need:
6 inch hook nose propeller
Craft sticks
Paperclips
Rubber bands
Cardstock
Masking tape
scissors

1.    Get a craft stick and attach it to a propeller.

 

2.    Get a paperclip and bend it like an L

3.    Tightly tape the paperclip to the stick

4.    Cut a helicopter shape out of cardstock. Attach it to the craft stick.

 
5.    Hook the rubber band onto the paperclip

5.    Hook the other side of the rubber band to the propeller.

7.    Spin the propeller. Throw the helicopter up into the air and it will fly.
